Formada Founder Meghan Kelly answers the question, "Do digital marketing agencies create content?"

What Do Digital Marketing Agencies Do?

I believe that communication is central to the success of any relationship — personal, business, or otherwise. The onus is on me to be a good, active listener and to do my best to convey my ideas as clearly as possible. This isn’t always easy.

We started Formada back in 2018, and my parents still don’t fully understand what our business does. “So, your business,” my dad will say on a semi-annual basis, “What exactly do you guys do?”

And I do my best to relate our work to a world that he best understands. He’s someone who has been retired for at least twenty years. Is defiantly anti-smartphone. Has the most basic cellphone possible, and only has it because he was forced to buy it under duress. (He doesn’t want to be reached when he’s bluegill fishing. Who could blame him?)

It’s not that he doesn’t care. I know that he does. But up until I founded Formada, he never really needed to know what a digital marketing agency is.

These conversations are a good reminder that most people aren’t thinking about the ins and outs of digital marketing. If you’re not in the industry or you’re not a business owner who is taking an active role in your marketing’s performance, why would you?

As an agency owner, I’m always looking for new topics to explore, more questions to answer for folks who need digital marketing support, and I was surprised when I saw more and more people asking, “Do digital marketing agencies create content?”

The answer isn’t complex, but it’s not necessarily cut and dry, either. Let’s get into it.

Do Digital Marketing Agencies Create Content?

There are a lot of different types of digital marketing agencies out there, and many of them specialize in one very specific niche.

Digital Media Agencies

Digital Media Agencies, for instance, typically focus on advising companies on where they should advertise, how to secure space with those advertising platforms, as well as brand positioning, and public relations activities.

Branding Agencies

Branding Agencies specialize in developing or refreshing brands for businesses, helping them to create a brand identity, including elements like a brand name, logos and brand colors, messaging, and other elements that are designed to differentiate an organization in the marketplace.

Web Agencies

Web Agencies are responsible for the development, design, creation, and hosting of websites, although it’s quite common for certain web agencies to specialize in just one or some of these things.

Creative Agencies

Creative Agencies offer a variety of services related to advertising and marketing, including branding, graphic design, video production, campaign development and management, public relations, and more.

Email Marketing Agencies

Email Marketing Agencies focus on, you guessed it, email marketing. But email marketing is much more complex than the simple creation and distribution of email. It can include highly specific audience segmentation, message variations, and other elements that require complex campaign architecture and expert management in order to garner a high return on your investment.

SEO Agencies

SEO Agencies help businesses rank higher in organic search engine rankings and improve their online presence through keyword-driven content creation, linking strategies, website auditing, and more.

These are just some of the specializations that are out there. I haven’t even touched on Social Media Marketing Agencies, Paid Search Agencies, or Content Marketing Agencies.

Some of these digital marketing agencies create content, and others don’t.

For example, content creation is critical to the success of the average SEO Agency — their content work is designed specifically to drive traffic to a business’s website and increase their online presence, whereas a Website Agency might be more focused on building the platform where that optimized content will ultimately live.

An Email Marketing Agency technically creates content, but email is designed for a very specific type of transaction — its purpose is typically to drive direct traffic to your website vs. grow your online presence and increase your organic traffic. Different purposes. Different goals. And different outcomes.

So where does Formada fit into all of this?

Formada is a digital marketing agency through and through — our specialty lies in developing a strong relationship with you as a client by gaining a deep understanding of your business.

What are your past experiences with marketing? What does success look like? How can we seamlessly plug into your operations so we feel like an extension of your team, whether that means we’re elevating your existing marketing resources, or filling gaps.

We’re creating a custom strategy for your business that draws on tactics that include website development, paid search and social media campaigns, and yes, content.

In our view, marketing should make your life simpler and your business more successful — instead of working with separate agencies (and numerous points of contact) for your most important marketing resources, we offer a centralized solution where your campaign tactics are all working together to achieve a common goal.

Do Digital Marketing Agencies Create Content? Formada Does!

We do more than just create content. We’ll audit your existing website, your blog, and other resources to give you a better understanding of what’s working, what isn’t, and what might be missing.

We’ll use Google Analytics and do independent keyword research in order to give you advice that we can take action on together in order to improve the return on your marketing dollars.

In addition to content auditing, we can use that same keyword research to create a custom content calendar that helps you forecast what you’ll publish in the future, giving your content marketing clarity and consistency. Consistency is one of the biggest hurdles we see businesses facing when it comes to regularly publishing content.

Finding the right topics and finding the right time to create that content can be difficult, so a content calendar can create a foundation for you to work from, even if it gets adjusted over time due to new business goals or changes in the marketplace.

Of course, we specialize in creating content, too. Blogs, web pages, landing pages, email copy, white papers, case studies, social media posts, e-books — our team loves to help businesses develop their voices online through original content.

Our writers are genuinely interested in how your business works. We’re passionate about creating content that is informative and useful to your customers. To help you build authority. To increase your online presence. And, of course, to help you grow your revenue.

So, do marketing agencies create content? Formada does!
